Making Through the Dark, Why Autumn Is the Perfect Time to Get Creative

Here we are again that time of year when daylight clocks out early, the kettle’s always on, and you start measuring time in mugs of tea instead of hours. The days might be shorter, but they’re perfect for one thing: making stuff . When the light fades, creativity clocks in There’s something about darker evenings that makes us want to hunker down and do things . The world outside gets quieter, and suddenly the idea of starting a new project feels... nice. Manageable. Comforting, even. Maybe it’s the flicker of a candle, or the excuse to wear the big jumper, but this time of year practically begs for a little hands-on creativity. What you can make (without leaving the house) You don’t need a full studio or fancy tools. You just need the urge to tinker, stitch, pour, paint, or play. Here are a few ideas that feel just right for autumn evenings: Pour your own candles – melt, scent, pour, repeat. Bonus points if you reuse old jars. Knit (or learn to knit) a scarf – something s...

How Crafting, Creating, and Coming Together Can Heal the Loneliness Epidemic

Surrounded by screens, connected to everyone, but somehow still feeling apart ,it’s one of the quiet contradictions of our time. You’re not alone in that feeling, even if it sometimes feels that way. Recent European studies show loneliness isn’t just a “sad occasional thing” for many people (especially younger people), it’s creeping in more often than we might expect. But the good news? Real-life connection making together, learning together can push it back. What the Research Says (Without Making You Depressed) A 2024 Bertelsmann Stiftung study found that around 57% of young Europeans aged 18–35 feel moderately or strongly lonely. ANSA.it +1 In Ireland, about 20% of people report feeling lonely most or all of the time , which is higher than the EU average of about 13%. The Irish Times +1 The OECD reports that those aged 16–24 in Ireland are more likely to say they felt “lonely most or all of the time” than people over 65. The Irish Times From The Irish Longitudinal...

A Roundup of Halloween Workshops in Ireland (For Grown Ups)

It is the season of ghosts, pumpkins and people getting suspiciously good at face paint. If you are looking to lean into the Halloween spirit without buying a polyester cape, we have you covered. These workshops are for grown ups. No face painting stations, no glitter glue, no one screaming about sweets. Just some creative people, some unusual materials, and a few chances to make things with your hands before the end of October. Here is what we have found. Pumpkins, Petals and Prosecco This one comes from Why Not Flowers in Inchicore. It is exactly what it sounds like. Carve a pumpkin, make a bouquet, have a glass of prosecco. It is relaxed, hands on, and strictly over 18s. Sessions are running on the 22nd & 23rd of October and usually start at 7pm. You will need to book in advance. It sells out quickly.  Linocut Workshop – Halloween Edition If you like the sound of carving things but not necessarily vegetables, there is a Halloween linocut workshop happening on Camd...

Do you run workshops , big or small, where people can learn, tinker, and create? We’d love to hear from you! At Makerland.ie , we’re building a new space to showcase workshops happening across the country. Why? Because we know how much time and love you put into running them  and we want to make sure people can actually find you . So if you’re running a workshop (or thinking of starting one), please get in touch. We’ll list your events for free, spread the word, and help more people discover the joy of making while helping you fill those seats and grow your community. Drop us a message at makerlandire@gmail.com, and let’s get your workshops seen! Let’s make Ireland’s maker community stronger, together. 💚
