Lately, I’ve noticed something. I pick up my phone to check one message… and suddenly an hour has passed. Instagram, TikTok, endless scrolling. And when I finally put the phone down, I don’t feel inspired. I feel drained.
The truth is: I miss being creative.
Scrolling is easy but it doesn’t fill me up the way making something does. Creativity feels different. When I’m making, even if it’s just doodling on a page or trying a new recipe, I feel more alive, calmer, and prouder of myself than I ever do after an evening lost in my phone.
And here’s the thing: creativity doesn’t have to be perfect. It doesn’t have to be good. It doesn’t even have to make sense. The point is that you switch off the noise and give yourself permission to create.
So today, I’m challenging myself (and maybe you too) to put the phone down for a little while and try something anything creative instead.
-
Write a messy journal page.
-
Cook something new with what you already have in the cupboard.
-
Doodle, paint, or collage with scraps of paper.
-
Step outside and take three photos of things that catch your eye.
-
Make something that doesn’t need to be shared online.
It doesn’t have to be big. Even ten minutes can feel like a reset.
I’m reminding myself: life feels better when I’m creating, not just consuming. And if you’ve been spending too much time on your phone too, maybe this is your reminder as well.
Because creativity matters. And it’s waiting for us as soon as we put the phone down.
That's why I am building Makerland.
Makerland is a space to explore creativity, reconnect with making, and support the incredible Irish makers keeping creativity alive
